Halloween Witch Hat Knitting Pattern
For Handspun Yarn
Adult-Size Hand Knit Hat
Handspun yarn lends itself perfectly to this slouchy witch hat pattern. I used about 60 yards of my bulky corespun art yarn for this fast-knit project.
Materials:
Size US 13 circular and double pointed needles (DPNs)
Approx 60-70 yards of bulky thick and thin yarn
20 or similar gauge wire
Stitch markers or contrasting yarn scraps (optional)
This hat is knit in the round using a stockinette stitch starting with the outer edge of the brim and working inwards. I used circular needles until I reached the narrow point and switched to DPNs. Decreases use a k2tog stitch.
Finished Size:
14 inches wide x 22 inches long (excluding tail)
Gauge: 6 sts/6 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Abbreviations:
k2tog = knit two together
k = knit
st = stitch
Brim
Cast on about 64 stitches (I used a long tail cast on of about 80 inches or roughly 3x the circumference needed for the brim’s outer edge.)
Row 1:
Place a stitch marker and k one round. Make sure not to twist your stitches.
Rounds 2-8: Continue knitting. Decrease randomly 2 or 3 times per row using k2tog until you reach about 32 stitches left on your needles (about 6-8 rows or 3-4 inches). If you want a wider brim you can add more rows. Decreasing randomly will make the shape slumpy/wavy. You can place a removable stitch marker or piece of contrasting scrap yarn where you decrease so you can track them.
Head
Row 1: Start when you have about 32 st on your needles (for a medium size hat). I used 34 st and it is a bit loose/large size.
Knit in the round for about 15 rounds or 6-7 inches.
Point
Start tapering off the point.
K 2 rows while decreasing using k2tog on the last 2 st of each row. You can place a stitch marker to keep track of your decreases.
K 1 row decreasing halfway through the row (about 16 st) using k2tog st. Place another stitch marker.
Repeat previous row decreasing on the previous k2tog st.
K 1 row ¼ of the way across the round (6 or 7 stitches) and k2tog. Place a stitch marker.
Repeat previous row decreasing on the previous k2tog st.
You should now have about 26-28 stitches left on your needles.
You can switch to double pointed needles if needed.
K 1 row ¾ of the way across the round (about 21 stitches) and k2tog. Place a stitch marker.
Repeat previous row decreasing on the previous k2tog st.
K 4 rows.
K2tog the 1st 2 stitches in the row and place a stitch marker.
Repeat previous row decreasing on the previous k2tog st.
Knit 1 row decreasing 1-2 times per row randomly until you get down to three stitches on the needles.
Then stitch an i-cord for about 5 rows or about 4 inches and bind off. Pull the end through the last loop to fasten it. Leave the tail of yarn or attach a pom pom etc.
Add wire to brim by weaving in and out around the outer edge.
Happy Haunting!
